Many new players ask the question: "Can you help me learn some new tactics?" but they are often dissapointed with the reply: "It depends on your army and how you play it".  To this, I am reminded of the words of Inquisitor Czevak: "Ask not the Eldar a question, for they will give you three answers; all of which are true and horrifying to know."

While it is true, tactics differ from army to army, even ones from the same race, it is not to say that there are no "basic" tactics one can learn in 40k to improve their overall success.  Most veterans allready know them and/or take them into account without even thinking about it.  Little hints are in every book published by GW, and while most of them are writen off as mere fluff, if you take them into account it'll definitly help.  So this section will show some of the knowledge contained in those books as "basic tactics", and while I could go through and explain one by one exactly what each quote means, I decided to let each player figure them out for themselves.  Mainly because telling a new player these things doesn't mean he'll remember them and take them into account, but if he's forced to reflect on them and think about them for himself, then hopefully they'll sink in a bit more.  Also it should be noted that even if you follow each of these guide lines, it won't mean you'll win every game; these just improve your chances.  So please read on, and good luck in your future games!

The key to victory is never simple, unless you have a REALLY BIG gun!

"The arming of Titans, must by necessity always be a compromise.  To gain long range you must sacrifice close combat ability, and vice versa.  You must approach this decission at two levels.  Firstly, the level of the individual Titan.  Consider carefully what it must achieve and how its' armament will affect its' ability to fulfil its' objective.  Secondly, the level of the force itself: this may be the legion as a whole, or a battle group on a particular mission.  Never forget that a titan force is a team - a single body, and may have specialized members designed for specific tasks."

- De Bellis Titanicus, attributed to Haran Jax

"Always endeavour to fight the nemy on your own terms.  If you are powerful at close quarters then engage in dense terrain where your advantage will prove the greatest.  If you are superior at long range then fight the battle at a distance.  If you have greater numbers then attack along an extened front, use reserves to break through when the enemy's lines have collapsed.  If outnumbered then concentrate your force so that the enemy can fight only your best troops.  No one ever won a battle who failed to take advantage of his enemy' weakness."

- Tactica Imperium

"Do not strike until you are reday to crush the enemy uterly, and then attack without mercy, destroy every vestige of resistance, leave no one to work against you."

- Tactica Imperium

"The supporting fire of one's brethren is always a comfort.  Provided it doesn't hit oneself"

- Grand Master Thordun Ranxey, Dead Bolts

"Used correctly, terrain is a seconmd weapon in your arsenal, equal to a Tian itself.  Make the battlefield work for you or you will find it working for your opponent."

- Grand Master Ferromort, Ordo Sinister, Divisio Militaris

"You strive for victory, that is obvous.  What may be less obvious is the nature of victory.  There are circumstances in which you can destroy the enemy utterly, without loss to your own force, and yet victory will be his.  In all situations you must first decide on the nature of victory, and then take steps to secure it.  Avoid the instinct to fight first and think later."

- Leman Russ Meditaions, Book VI

"Martial vigour and ferocity are virtues, to be sure, but do not throw your forces blindly into the battle and say this vigour.  It is not.  Before commting your forces, examine the situation.  Review your own strengths and that of the enemy.  Remember your own objectives, and try to anticipate those of your enemy.  He who fights a battle without understanding places himself at a disadvantage."

 - Legion Astartes: Collects of War

While this is just a little bit of knowledge taken from just two books, there is much more knowledge of the "basic tactics of 40k" found everywhere.  Much more research needs to be done to finish this collection.  In the end, I leave one last statement from the De Bellis Titanicus regarding the subject of basic tactics: "Meditate on the subject if you feel the need, or consult the Imeprial Tarot.  The decision is important, so do not take it lightly."
